the HISD Outdoor Education Center

at forest glen

The Houston Independent School District OEC at Forest Glen offers a unique outdoor experience for 5th-graders in the Sam Houston National Forest located in Huntsville, Texas.  Lessons in environmental science and social studies guide discovery and exploration that stimulate an appreciation and understanding of interdependence from: one person to another; one culture to another; people to nature; and nature to nature.

The Houston ISD Outdoor Education Center at Forest Glen accepts applications for the Associate Outdoor Education Leader (AOEL) position throughout the year.  A new AOEL should expect to work from late August through late April (162 day work year).

As an AOEL you will work to establish a positive group atmosphere, teach experiential classes and facilitate structured journal writing.  You will be responsible for supervising 10 to 14 students in a cabin group each week.  You should be a strong leader, an empathetic listener, an avid learner, and an engaging facilitator.  You should also be a strong advocate for children, nature and equality.

During non-student work days, a new AOEL should expect to work on a variety of projects including: lesson planning, class area setup, building of new structures, creating new teaching materials, and maintenance of existing areas and materials.

We require applicants to have at least two years of college experience, though a Bachelor's degree or higher is preferred.  It is highly recommended that applicants to this position have had experience teaching or working in residential camp settings.

All current employees of the Outdoor Education Center have been screened, interviewed, fingerprinted and have had a background check through Houston ISD.  All applicants must have required documentation to show eligibility to work in the United States.

Benefits include paid holidays, insurance (health, vision, dental, life, etc.), room and board, a refundable/transferable retirement plan, and paid professional development opportunities.
