The Houston Independent School District OEC at Forest Glen offers a unique outdoor experience for 5th-graders in the Sam Houston National Forest located in Huntsville, Texas.  Lessons in environmental science and social studies guide discovery and exploration that stimulate an appreciation and understanding of interdependence from: one person to another; one culture to another; people to nature; and nature to nature.

The OEC offers four interdisciplinary classes which utilize the natural environment of Forest Glen to teach concepts from the Texas state curriculum.

Teachers and staff take every opportunity to encourage critical thinking and immerse students in our unique setting.

Instructional groups vary in size depending on the class. While SOS Class and Native American Study are team-taught, with an average student to teacher ratio of 14:2, Pioneer Life and Natural Adventures Class use small-group instruction to better serve the students.

Outside of class time, students participate in a variety of team-building and problem solving activities that ultimately help promote a positive learning environment throughout their stay.
